Welcome from the MayorCity of Lewes website

One of the planning goals and principles developed from the first workshop:

"The restoration of the Old Boatyard site as a first phase of a new vision for the Canalfront area will demonstrate the reuse and upgrade of the ecological aesthetic of a formerly industrial site. The park will serve as a destination, but also as a connector to other experiences along the Canal, both on land and on the water. "

  • The Park includes a natural storm water management system that will reduce run-off into the canal by 85%.
  • Attractive, “rain gardens” and a natural Tidal Pond will add to the Park’s beauty while preserving our unique environment
  • Relocation of the Boat Launch to Roosevelt Inlet will reduce the impact of 10,000 boats that now enter the Canal at its mid-point, with pollution of gravel, grime, oil and gasoline.
  • These contaminants from Front Street and the Boat Launch asphalt parking area that now wash into the canal will be replaced by a clean Village Green.
  • The addition of thousands of trees and plantings will help manage flooding and replenish the air in Lewes’s town center.
  • Educational signage by the Tidal Pond and Canal will help visitors understand and appreciate the marine species and biology of our region.
