ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Visionaries of the Canalfront Park wanted from the beginning to connect the Park to other experiences along the Canal, both on land and on the water. In the process they created a unique place that offers several environmental benefits to the community.
In October 2011, the Canalfront Park received the 2011 Sustainability Award from the American Institute of Architects, Delaware chapter.
The Park’s environmentally triumphal moves thus far include:
- Reducing the original amount of impervious surface
- Creating stormwater management system, which reduces the runoff into the canal by 85 percent.
- Relocating the boat launch to reduce the amount of contaminants which enter the canal
- Planting attractive “rain gardens” with thousands of plantings and tidal pond, which showcase the local biology and improve the air and water quality of this unique environment.”
